Elpida to Mass Produce 4-Gigabit DRAM Chip in June 2011

Elpida announced on April 7, 2011 that the company has developed a 4-gigabit DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) chip for Smartphones and tablet devices, according to Reuters. Volume production is slated for June this year at a plant in Hiroshima, Japan. Elpida estimates that the new DRAM chip will create sales of approximately 100 billion yen (US$1.17 billion; US$1=85.3 yen) in fiscal year 2012. It is projected that Elpida will also begin production in Taiwan and start supplying the new chip to its customers as early as this summer.
